If you haven't tried Cannabis in the past decade, you might be a little intimidated on how to safely try it again. Many Seniors are now turning to Medical Marijuana for relief for a variety of conditions. Now, in the commercialized landscape of legal Cannabis, there are hundreds of strains to choose from and different strength (Cannabinoid content) varieties out there. Being intimidated is understandable, where to start? Most people who are willing to self-test the efficacy of Medical Marijuana for the first time tend to gravitate towards edible products. For that reason, we'll focus on building a dosage regimen from that.
First, the most important thing to remember with edibles, it can take up to three hours before you feel the effects. If you start with the proper dosage but feel no effects after an hour, wait! Do not eat more of the edible, you could be compounding the eventual effects. However, with a proper dosage regimen, this worry can be eliminated. Safety first!
Anecdotal evidence seems to indicate that thinner people, with quicker metabolisms, will feel the effects sooner than people with more body fat or with slower metabolisms. Here are two real world examples we have handled. Person A is thinner and has a low body fat ratio. With them, effects from edibles commonly take 15 minutes to be observed and 3 hours to complete. Person B is roughly 50 lbs over the suggested weight for their height. Effects are commonly felt in the 1.5-2 hr range and last up to 4 hours after that. How long the edible takes to "kick in" will vary by body weight, tolerance, metabolism and other factors. The slogan here is - go slow, start low (dosage).

All legally sold Cannabis edibles come in measured potencies. In our home state of Washington, 10mg (THC content) is the strongest single dose that is available recreationally. We have worked with people who have a maximum tolerance of 5mg, we also have worked with people who need 100mg before any effects are noticed. This too varies by tolerance, pain and other factors. So, how to begin finding what is right for you? Here we go!
We'll start by legally purchasing a chocolate bar that has 5, 10mg servings. This means that if you ate the whole candy bar (which is tempting because they taste so good) you will have consumed a 50 mg dose. Make sure you are familiar with the serving size and total mg of any edible you purchase.
Next, we will divide the pre-divided 10mg dose into something smaller. You can choose to cut it in half, quarters or thirds. *Note, that the reduced dosage isn't precise but in reality the margin of error is negligible. Lets say we cut the 10mg single serving in half, giving us a 5mg dose. Before we ingest our edible, a few things we want to have prepared.
A first timers checklist -
Are you with a friend? Yes.
Are you in a safe and comfortable environment? Yes
Do you need to drive anywhere later in the day? No
Is your stomach full or is it empty? Should not matter
Have you selected an enjoyable meal, or music, perhaps a movie to watch with your experience? Yes. This can help provide positive and comforting stimulus.
Will you be disappointed if you feel no effects? Don't be, finding an individuals tolerance is something that needs to be worked towards, in a safe manner.
Should you eat more if you don't feel any effects right away? Absolutely not! (unless you are a trained professional)

When working to find your tolerance, it is suggested to start with micro-dosing. With edibles, if you start with 5mg and you feel no effects, it isn't recommended that you necessarily jump up to a 10mg dose next time. Wait until a new day and start again with your 5mg dosage. If you feel no effects within two hours, take another 5mg dosage and stop there. Cumulatively you have added a 10mg dosage but it has been broken into separate "peak" times. This way if you do feel the effects after the second dosage, it won't have the impact of a single 10mg dose. If you felt a strong effect from the 5mg dosage, try reducing the amount until you find a comfortable level.
Based off of that experience you can determine if you need a higher or lower dosage. Using the same system of increasing the mg above, you can safely work your way to finding what is right for your body and condition. There is no scientific debate over whether a 10mg dosage will cause a lethal overdose (ld50) it is not going to be a toxic or lethal dose. It is not even in the neighborhood, our solar system for a more accurate description.
During your experience you might feel -
Euphoric
relaxed
body tingles
pain relief
and some people have also reported
acute paranoia
increased heart rate
balance problems
effects lasting up to 8 hours
Under no circumstances is it suggested to drive. This is why we recommend you plan a fun experience with a couple of friends and to always have the sober designated driver for munches or emergencies. Stay safe and enjoy this upcoming 4:20 holiday.
