Dosage safety for MMJ edibles - How strong is it?

Cooking with MMJ is one of the most rewarding ways to medicate due to the sheer variety of options. Thousands of people safely medicate everyday with edibles but we would like to emphasize the precautions to take in order to avoid too strong of a result.
While no overdose death has been directly attributed to Pot, edibles have brought a few people to the emergency room, but don't panic. Exponentially more people seek emergency room treatment for negative reactions to prescribed medicine every year than there are visits created by Pot edibles.
That being said, responsible use and education are amongst our goals at Seniors MMJ Network. The formula below is to help properly estimate the dosage levels of your edibles / Cannabutter.
First, identify the percentage of THC in the strain you’re cooking with. Most MMJ Dispensaries and ALL of the recreational stores in Washington will have this information on each bag. On average, most strains have about 10-13 percent THC. Strains that have 15-20 percent THC are above average, and those with 21 percent THC or higher are exceptionally strong.
If you aren't provided with lab test results for the strain at your place of purchase, you can go online and Google the strain name. You can get a general estimate for the THC potential of that strain. Another option is to use the average estimate at 10 percent THC.
Every 1 gram of cannabis bud has 1,000mg of dry weight. If a strain has about 10% THC, ten percent of 1,000mg would be 100mg. So for cooking or baking at home, it is safe to assume that a gram of cannabis contains at least 100mg THC.
To calculate the dosage strength of your edibles, take the amount of ground marijuana, convert it to milligrams and divide it by the recipe yield to determine a per-serving dose of THC.
A starting dosage for beginners is 5 milligrams per serving. Three grams of (average THC content) ground marijuana equals 300mg THC. 300mg divided by the recipe yield, (a classic cookie recipe makes 60 cookies) equals 5mg per cookie.
Using this formula for measurement, do the math accordingly to find out how much THC per serving and medicate safely. Keep in mind that everyone's metabolism is different, and your weight and fitness will play a role in how your body reacts to edible pot foods. Pain patients seeking to replace pharmaceuticals can grow to tolerate daily doses of THC well beyond the dosage recommended above.
