Environment can make a large difference in the quality of your stash. The terpenes and cannabinoids in your Marijuana are volatile and can be lost if stored improperly. There is a debate about shelf life, but the way that your MMJ is stored has a lot to do with it's longevity.
To begin with, remove your MMJ from any plastic bags or plastic bottles and put it in glass jars. Canning jars are great and form a nice airtight seal. This helps it from absorbing surrounding smells. If you keep your Medical Marijuana in a baggy, in the same drawer as your incense…. your MMJ is going to taste like incense. Just like the food in the refridgerator, MMJ can absorb and retain undesirable smells.
Things you want to avoid :
light
heat
moisture
Light breaks down desirable cannabinoids like THC at a faster rate, converting them into less desirable (but still beneficial) cannabinoids like CBN, which is known for making users sleepy. You can find opaque jars to store your stash. Even with that, don't leave your jar sitting in the sunlight, we recommend a dark cupboard or lock box.
Heat will cook off terpenes and flavinoids, which are responsible for many human responses, but you're familiar with them as the smell and the taste. Ideal storage temperatures would range from 55-65 degrees.
Moisture is an enemy. Moisture inside of your jars can create mold, which can cause negative health effects. You will not be able to see all types of mold but if you do see white spots, throw it out! Do not put desiccant packets into the jars if your MMJ is overly moist when you purchase it. Leave the lid off of the jar and check the moisture level every 12 hours until your Medical Marijuana is dry enough to seal the lid.
If your MMJ becomes too dry, don't place objects like fruit peels or tortillas in the jar to give it some moisture back. Organic objects decompose and that is not the ideal environment for your Medical Marijuana to be sealed in.

There are a variety of ways to keep MMJ out of the hands of children.
Put your MMJ in a lock box, in a private area of the house. Don't keep the keys sitting in a drawer, where children might find them.
Place the MMJ on the top shelf of an upper cupboard. The small cupboards above the refrigerator is tough for little ones to get at.
Packaging is important. Using child-resistant storage is ideal. We'd also recommend to use dark or bland packaging, nothing that would catch their eye or attention. (Don't hide it in the Oreo's box)
The most common jars you will find in use, are Ball canning jars. They make a great airtight seal for storage and they come in many different sizes. They are inexpensive and readily available.
