Oregon legalizes pot

July 1, 2015 marks the effective date for ballot measure 91, which legalized recreational Marijuana in Oregon state. However, what the voters of Oregon chose to pass is far from what is being put into place, leaving many questioning how that is legally possible. Today, we will focus on the positive aspects and educate you on what you can and can't do in Oregon.

Grow your own - Excellent for Seniors and medical patients. Each household is allowed to grow up to four plants, indoors or outdoors. The rules state that outdoor grows must be concealed from passersby and in coordination with local ordinances. This portion of the bill allows people to take control of their medicine. It can be grown organically and pesticide free, which isn't something you are likely to find at recreational outlets.

Gifting of Marijuana - Exactly what the patients need. Anyone buying or selling marijuana without a license is still subject to arrest but this allows caregivers to supply patients with free medicine. This is a common practice and now it is protected by law, patients have one less legal worry.

Eight ounce home limit - This allows Seniors and medical patients to have adequate supplies at home. Mobility is an issue for many and frequent trips to a dispensary can create hardships. Outside of the home you are allowed one ounce. Significantly less than the home allowance but still adequate to be considered a daily supply, even for the heftiest of consumers.

Recreational stores are not open yet. There is no hard timeline but the estimated date for recreational shops to be fully stocked and open, is late 2016. Currently, there is talk in the legislature of allowing recreational sales in the established Medical Marijuana dispensaries as soon as October 2015.

The voters of Oregon have passed a fairly solid legalization bill. It has many advantages over Washingtons' laws and it is still moderate compared to Colorado. Another state joins in the great "Marijuana experiment". It has worked well for the two legalized states thus far and the same is anticipated in Oregon.

Somethings that you won't be allowed to do, is to posses Marijuana if you are under 21, sell small or large amounts of Marijuana or to take your MMJ over state lines, even into Washington.
